We met Katerina Bebe, a highly energetic and resolute Romani activist, during our filming in Greece in 2010, where she fights a gigantic struggle against poverty, unemployment and educational problem amid the Greek economic crisis.
Dendropotamos is part of the municipality of Menemeni in Thessaloniki. Its population is around 3000 of which two thirds are Greek Roma. Fleeing from the ruins of Asia Minor, the Roma were the first settlers in the district. Nowadays, Dendropotamos is a neighborhood beset with social problems where many families live in poverty. With limited access to appropriate housing, education and healthcare combined with high unemployment, the area has become one of the poorest in the whole of Greece.
